Anyone know this one?
If I know correctly, this is a weed, it's constantly seeding, it's roots spread laterally, and it's able to grow in the cracks of building. according to [livejournal.com profile] nysidra.

I was only able to add that it appeared to be a "succululent" by which I meant succulent. Unless I'm wrong, and the photographer corrects me, the photgraph was taken near Pensacola Florida.

We have so much of this in our yard! We call it "Mother of Thousands." I think it's also called Chandellier Plant, too - because of the red flowers that hang down when it blooms. Great stuff.

These plants spread via seeds, roots, breaking a piece off and watering it, and through baby plantlets at the ends of its leaves. GORGEOUS and very unusual flowers.

"succululent"? It stores water and sounds like Xena?

I pinpointed this quote by searching for it, and finding an academic paper entitled

Ululating? You mean it's a girl plant?

I haven't even seen Monster House yet, but I'm stunned and pleased that line made it into the trailer. If you haven't seen a bunch of kid flicks this summer and thus missed the trailer, the kids are inside the monster house and saying "If those are the teeth than that must be the uvula" "Oooooh. So it's a girl house?"

This is freakin' awesome. The 3rd link [livejournal.com profile] karasuhaiku linked to is a dedicated domain. (http://www.bryophyllum.com/).

That link goes directly to an image of the plant reproducing. It's neat! They grow little plants complete with leaves and rootlets and I guess either drop them off or wait for something to come by and brush them off. How awesome is that?

We have many of these and love them. Saw them at Selby Botanical Gardens in Florida, too. They are easy to grow here in the heat, and the teeny tiny plantlets are, well, ADORABLE. You really should see this plant flower. Glad I could help! :)

Baby plant squee. I do want to find a picture of the flowering, but it must be spectacular. Like cacti? I'll go ask Uncle Google. Thanks. I'm not a botanist or anything, but stuff like this makes my day.

There are flowering pics on that bryophyllum website.

Would this grow well in a pot in New England, like a jade or a aloe vera? Where can I get one? If I send you money, would you send me a plantlet?

I think it would grow excellently. It's been quite hardy. It survived in the worse conditions before I gave it better soil. I'm guessing it likes warmth though, so I'm not sure how winter hardy it would be on the outside.

I'll give you a bag full of the seeds for nothing more than postage if you'd like.

I don't know if they'd grow in New England or not. I'd be happy to send you plantlets for free, we have so many - but I'm not sure how to properly ship them so they don't die in transit. Ideas, anyone?

A handfull of the seeds in a wet paper napkin?

If you overnight it, they should survive the trip.

Ours grow to about three feet tall. Sometimes, when they're flowering, they topple over under their own weight, but the stem then roots in and keeps the plant growing. Very hardy, clever plants. ;)

A friend gave me some plantlets in a styrofoam cup three years ago, and I've had it as a houseplant in Connecticut, where it thrives and has outgrown several pots. (Though I haven't seen it bloom yet.) I pulled some plants out of another pot and left them on the saucer underneath the pot--they only get water about once a week and grow anyway. I'm sure they're too hardy to die in transit, especially if it is an established plant (two inches will suffice) with some "spouts" thrown in for good measure.

Aye, Bryophyllum daigremontianum it be. We had one plant in our greenhouse at my undergrad college, who knows why... When I was charged with the duty of maintaining the greenhouses over the summer, I once spent 3 hours hunting down and removing all the little plantlets that had started to grow in other pots.

We also called it Mother of Thousands. I secretly tried my best to kill the damned thing, but nothing I did to it harmed it one bit.

Thank you so much for your help!

I have several other plants and after a windy rain, I noticed the little seedlings had travelled to my other plants. I remarked how "cute" this was to my husband at which he admonished, "You don't want those growing anywhere else. They'll kill your plants."

So I've had some fun of finding them too. ^_^

OMG YAY!

Thank you to everyone who answered.

Yes, it was taken in Pensacola, FL.

Now that I know it's a "True" weed, I can stop worrying about how to care for it! *laughs*

I think it's a really beautiful plant, and I'll love to see what it does on the ground.

Wow, I remember growing those as a houseplant when I was a kid. We called them "Mother of Millions". It made a great houseplant, but it doesn't seem to be available commercially. I think I got mine from a neighbor. They do multiply like crazy. I'd like to have one again, but they don't grow here in MN.

My brother used to have one of these as a houseplant. His former wife bought it at a University of Minnesota plant sale and it grew like a huge weed!

My step-father used to have one of these, he got it from an Asian man(never found out where he was from). But the man wouldn't let him buy it from him, so another man that worked at this store stole some of the seeds and game them to my step-dad. They said that this plant makes you very rich and you can only take as many seed as you "need", and you can not GIVE them away if you took more than you needed. I forgot what we called the plant though.

My X and I had one of these. It was left in our apartment when we moved into it, and eventually grew up taller than the refrigerator. (As soon as I figure out how to attatch a pic I will). We just called it the "dinosaur plant", since nobody we showed it to knew what it was.
