Subways

Just got a link from [livejournal.com profile] smallerdemon (by way of metafilter).

Beautiful subways from around the world.

Not surprising: Tons of European subways.

Surprising: Tehran, Pyongyang, Los Angeles.

Nice to see: Ones I've been on: Boston, Washington, Santiago.

Hey,

Way cool. Even though Subways should be creepy, not beautiful. Has CHUD taught architects nothing?!!

btw- doesn't really count as a subway, but here's some shots of a (now abandoned) undergound city beneath Moscow built during the Cold War:

*sigh* Los Angeles, a good way to get to hollywood without the traffic. If only LA would decide to do more with its public transportation.

Yeah, I have to admit a great love for subways, but also I love above ground transit rail in cities for some reason. The idea of trains running above ground inside a busy metropolis is very appealing to me for some reason. It's one of my favorite things about San Francisco, and one of the things I loved so much about Vienna with their above ground light-rail tram.

Chicago and Paris have similar above ground but elevated above the ground (although most of Paris' is underground). It's good enough for me, though. :) I love both of them.

I've been to Vienna, D.C., Portland (hooray for being represented!), Paris (and yes, that system is overall one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen - one of the most enjoyable parts of our trip to Paris was just riding the subway), New York, (I have, in fact, been in that very station with cool floor sculptures), London.

These photos only wet my appetite for travel even more (not that it hasn't already become unquenchable).

Wow, Tashkent for the win. I want to /live/ there.

(Well, no I don't, but wow, good lighting, you know?)

I ride through that Vancouver station on a regular basis (it's the stop before I get off for work). All of the Sky Train is actually quite pretty -- it's a beautiful ride too.

Mmm, Singapore is on it too. :)
