Nature at work

I take these pictures in large part to remind me that I work in a beautiful place, and to stop complaining and enjoy it.

One of the exhibits I take care of has a concrete stairway down into a basement, opposite a vernal pool (pictured in icon). When amphibians leave the vernal pool (because they have metamorphosed, or the pool is drying up) they get trapped in the stairway. Usually they are little things--salamanders and wood frogs. This bullfrog was there, attracting the attention of many visitors. I carried him to the next pond, and set him in the water, where he sat regaining his strength so I could take this picture.

One recent rainy day I was talking to a coworker when I noticed this nematode crawling across the top rail of a wood fence. A giant roundworm, at about 2cm long.

One of our new teachers likes to balance rocks.
