I realize now that void of the holiday that should take place inbetween Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox (alas: Candlemas, St.Brigid's Day and Imbolg are celebrated by very few) has been filled by Superbowl Sunday.

It used to be that you could opt out of Christmas by simply not being a Christian (the retail industry has made short work of that excuse). It is inappropriate to chastise someone because of their religion. But those of us who do not celebrate the Superbowl--we are cultural infidels--our lack of Patriots garb is suspicious. Because it is a non-religious event, we can all rally around it--the news media can celebrate it with fervor that makes a coronation look demure. If you aren't interested in sports--what the hell is your problem?! It brings to mind, as usual, words from a song:

You really like gorillas?
We've got just the pet for you
It's the way you're forced to act
To survive our schools

Make your whole life revolve around sports
Walk tough -- don't act too smart
Be a mean machine
Then we'll let you get ahead

Jock-O-Rama -- Save my soul
We're under the thumb of the Beef Patrol
The future of America is in their hands
Watch it roll over Niagara Falls

Pep rally in the holy temple
And you're forced to go
Masturbate en masse
With the favored religious cult

Cheerleaders yell -- "Ra Ra team"
From the locker room parades the prime beef
When archaeologists dig this up
They'll either laugh or cry

Jock-O-Rama -- On the brain
Redneck-a-thon drivin' me insane
The future of America is in their hands
Watch it roll over Niagara Falls...

Cartoon Network had a couple of cartoon super bowls - Bugs vs. Daffy, etc. that were cute. We would have anti-super bowl parties and watch it. Then they ran out of characters to use, so now we just watch anything but.

Yeah we watched one of our Netflix ("Blow," not so good.) Apparently, Animal Planet had hours and hours of puppies playing. (We don't have cable, so I can't guess how that was.) It's amazing how afraid the other tv stations are of the Superbowl.
