She began to lose mobility in her back end a few weeks ago. Yesterday I picked her up and felt a large mass on her abdomen. Three years is the life expectancy for Virginia opossums, so I figured she'd be better off helped along. I brought her to the vet, who suspected heart damage, and put her to sleep.
well, that's too bad. they're such a cool animal; i see them most often on the road, sadly. i wish all cars came with those whistles on them that warn animals... do you know the ones i mean? seems like that would save a lot of little nocturnal guys like this. :(
I know the whistles you mean. I'm not sure how effective they are. Deer might move out of the way, but slow moving animals that have defenses other than running (possums, skunks, armadillos) still might not get out of the way.
i'm thinking, yes, she was speeding. my mom hit a cow once, very early morning. i think they call it false dawn- light, but no sun yet. anyway, she was going 45 mph. thankfully, she killed the cow rather than wounding it horribly, and didn't kill herself. the paramedic said she was the first person he'd seen walk away from a cow collision. thank you, honda civic.
Well, that makes me kind of glad It's a fair drive to the land of moose. Out here the biggest large animal we're in danger of hitting out here is tumbleweeds. They don't go through roofs, they just explode into a shower of tiny little pointy twigs. It's kinda fun actually.
There are plenty of big elk and wild horses up in the mountains, but either the roads aren't close to their stomping grounds or our large ruminants are more savvy than canadian ruminants.

I think this woman was probably speeding:
