More winter wonders

Raccoon and squirrel tracks on the snow on the ice on the pond in the deer enclosure.

The evening before I dumped out the turtle sandbox we use for the goose pool and left it upside-down and empty (in warmer weather, we refill the pool the day before to save time in the morning). When I turned it over in the morning to refill it, I involuntarily uttered OH MY GOD.

The very small amount of water in the overturned pool froze (crystallized?) in these patterns.

Total beauty!

It looks like antique wallpaper - like the kind of thing you'd see in a victorian home.

I love it when nature surprises me with something like that.

Oh, it does look like old wallpapper! My first thought was that it reminded me of those mendhi/henna designs from India.

Beautiful.

I love racoon paw prints. Little hands.

And how absolutly beautiful that print is!

That makes me think of that scene from Fantasia, with the dancing ice fairies and whatnot. :)

aww, they're like baby fractals! I wonder if I could make some in my backyard?

I can't believe you didn't call me to share! I really want you to e-mail me these photos so I can change my screen saver. They are insanely beautiful!

Wow! Nature is all about the awesome designs.

And well, because you brought it up first, here's a pic of more squirrel tracks. I watched this guy run across the street and play chicken with a car before making these prints. Not the best picture in the world but I'm crazy and have been trying to take pictures of our little bit of snow to prove we actually got some this year.

(Where was Bullwinkle?)

unexpected, AH!
a daily chore reveals
this bright jewel!

Wow, before I read the captions, I thought that you had a liner in the turtle sandbox (we have the same sandbox :) ).
That's a truly amazing pattern, what a find.

It looks so much like Victorian fern wallpaper, or fabric - I'm picturing it as curtains or a bedspread. How fantastic that you got a photo of this phenomenon. Beautiful.

Someone wrote a haiku about it on haikusenryu. :)

If nature and natural organic form isn't god's handwriting, I don't know what is.

Amazing.

Animal Tracks

I believe the pic at the top the tracks are Mink on the left and squirrel on the right. It is possible the tracks on the left are long tailed weasel but they appear to be mink.
