It was cloudy all day, so no shadows. We have three woodchucks, one on exhibit and two for programs. The one in the pictures is the female program woodchuck. We aren't allowed to name our wild animals (that doesn't always stop us). I sometimes call her "Squirmy." The male was named "Harley" by my former coworker, who gave him the box from her harley davidson boots to nest in when he was a baby.
They are very cute, but they are horrible monsters.
I thought the German lore was that if the groundhog doesn't see it's shadow, winter will end early. If it sees its shadow, that's 6 more weeks of winter... Never been to Punxsutawney, but I lived in very German areas of Pennsylvania long enough to learn their lore. Very strange people, those Pennsylvania Dutch.
Ours didn't officially have a name either, but we all referred to him as Chuckles. He did bite several people (thankfully never me) and was kind of cantankerous, but I loved him anyway.
So groundhogs are the same as woodchucks? Then they are also supposedly called "whistle pigs" by some people somewhere. I tried to rescue a hurt baby one once and I was very very glad I was wearing heavy gloves. It was a nippy thing. That picture looks a little like they are going to light a campfire under the critter.
HAppy groundhog day. It was sunny here which menas winter isn't over yet. Although I was talking to my grandmother about it and she says that those old superstitions don't work anymore thanks to c=global warming
