urbpan: (I LOVE DOGS)

Castle Island

We like going to Castle Island for a bunch of reasons. It's an interesting place with great views of the city and of the harbor island, there are cool birds there, and there are usually far fewer off-leash dogs there than at other places we walk. Usually. Yesterday was a sunny Sunday in the 50's following a work week that was bitterly cold, so there were tons of people out. More people at Castle Island than are there even in the middle of summer. And more off-leash dogs than ever before. So that meant paying a lot of attention to our dogs (making sure they weren't snuck up on, and that they didn't start freaking out at distant loose dogs) and not so much picture taking. Sadly, Alex has been sick and couldn't join us, and we miss her and hope she feels better soon. So, anyway, only three pictures, not too great, but better than nothing, right?

The Boston skyline, with incongruous pink factory in the center.

[livejournal.com profile] cottonmanifesto's much more interesting pictures are here. [livejournal.com profile] rockbalancer's pictures are still trapped in her camera as she waits for a new usb cable to arrive.

I work as a park ranger intern in San Diego, and dog off leash violations are by far the most common enforcement problem in parks.

You wouldn't believe how downright nasty some of those people are too (or actually, you just might know). We've had dog owners organize to fight "leash nazis" and threaten other citizens that ask them to put their dogs off leash, rangers have required multiple police officers for backup to issue citations for leash law violations, staff have been attacked, etc...

It's really outrageous. Pet owners are the most self-entitled neurotic crybabies imaginable--and I've been one most of my life, so I can say that. They can't possibly conceive that other people don't like dogs, that dogs don't cause environmental damage, that dogshit everywhere isn't a problem, or (in our case) that law-abiding people whose dogs don't like other dogs have a right to exist.

I used to get mad at the local police for ticketing loose dog owners, now I want to them to get medals.

hi! i live in suburban single home neighborhood.manicured lawns etc.we have a leash law.i have two dogs in a fenced in yard. i also have a neighbor that walks his huge boxer off leash and when he comes by my home his dog goes crazy.has jumped on my front door and tears up and down my newly seeded lawn to get to my dogs in the backyard.today for the first time i asked him to stop!!very nicely!he answered me he pays high taxes and that is why he moved to the suburbs for freedom for himself and his dog????talk about being "out of control" just had to vent myself to another dog lover who understands!!!i spoke to my local police and they said can issue summons if does not stop!!shall see!!do not wish to cause any neighbor issues??

This weekend seemed to be everybody's going out and walking the dog weekend.
I went to Wildwood Metropark here in Toledo on Saturday and Sunday. People and dogs everywhere! I took tons of pictures and will be posting them very soon.

The pink factory

The pink building is a power generating station. I think they painted it that color to make it more "friendly". Castle Island is my favorite late night striped bass fishing location. Meet some really interesting characters fishing the high tide at midnight. My favorite was a local mobster wannabe with his two flunkies who baited his hook for him and untangled snarls in his line. He invited me to go offshore shark fishing but I declined.

Rat problem castle island

send in a feral cat colony and rat terriers or pitbulls to Castle Island to remove the rats that are becoming a big problem there! just insure all have had rabies vaccinations first! this would be the purrfect solution! my pitbull like many has small prey drive and would love to kill those rats! although most of them are small and harmless to humans but the bacteria and fleas are problems! some of the rats are as big as cats! I felt sorry for those ones knowing they are older and prob nd to eat there or will starve! I see them in the rocks on waters edge during low tide! rats are a part of nature and serve a function to removing all would create other problems! but for now cats and terriers would take care of it!
