Turkey Video

I think Tito was kind of stuck for what to do next, so I suggested an activity. Please click the Tito link for more posts about Tito. (I think this is her last year.)

Awww ... tell Tito I said "hi". I wonder if she found any tasty morsels. You think this is her last year, how old is she? I will be sad if she dies. Of course almost everything makes me sad right now.

Tito is five this spring. [livejournal.com profile] rinalia works at a farm animal rescue, and she said that broad-breasted white turkeys usually die (of heart failure) at around 5.

Tito has bad arthritis, as well. I'm worried that she'll be unable to stand or walk soon, and I'll have to bring her to be euthanized.

I'm glad she was able to find something with which to entertain herself. :)

I thought only male turkeys had the brush feathers on thier breasts.

Apparently (I'm just learning now) that it is unusual for a hen to have a beard, but not unheard of. Tito is even more special, now!

I was going to comment on the beard too, but didn't want to seem like a redneck! =P

That was how she ended up with a male name: she started showing all these male characteristics (snood, beard, etc) before she ended all doubt by laying an egg!

That's almost exactly opposite of what happened with my turtle, "Shelly", now known as Sheldon.

I am not really sure if that makes sense, but I hope you know what I am trying to say. Case of mistaken gender identity...

"I think Tito was kind of stuck for what to do next, so I suggested an activity."

That the turkey might have been at a loss for what to do, and that she took your suggestion, are fascinating ideas.

Why wasn't she scratching in the grass on her own to begin with?

She was, for a bit, and then I set the camera down and she just sort of froze there for a few minutes. I cut a full minute off the beginning of the video!
