Balancing rocks

I tried some rock balancing yesterday. It cold and windy, but sunny. I like the meditative state of mind that you get into when you are doing this. I realized that one of the "tricks" to doing it, was knowing that it was possible. I wonder how many other things in life are like that.

This one was still up when I went by it a half hour later!

With two rocks on top, it's a cartoon character.

I wanted to try the same rock without the crack as a base. Much harder. I couldn't get another rock on top of it.

So I put its friends next to it, instead, before I left.

That's REALLY neat. How do you do it?

It's magic. ;)

I honestly can't describe it. You have to feel it.

Does it just take awhile to get the "feel" for it, the balancing point, the center, of things? I can only ask because I'll never be able to fly to Boston just for one of rockbalancer's classes, much as I want to. We've got rocks literally coming out of the ground out here (lol) and I'd love to learn this.

Well, I've only been doing it for a couple days now myself, and I haven't had a proper lesson from rockbalancer yet. What I've done has been from trial and error mostly.

These are terrific.

Too bad we don't have more suitable rocks in Richmond (away from the river, that is). This would make some terrific art.

To answer your other question, I can verify that people balancing is much the same as rock balancing; the list of things you can manage to not fall off of greatly increases once you believe you're not going to fall. During my time in professional theatre, I have seen (and performed myself) quite a few perches that seemed impossible without Jedi powers -- from standing on tiny toeholds to install lighting instruments, to one guy who hopped up on a piece of plywood supported by sawhorses, cut a hole that left about 2"-3" leeway on either side, then hopped down without the wood even seeming to bow. Not to mention the many, many people I've seen who seemed to have the ability to walk up walls.

Genetic modification and nanotechnology are nothing; I'll say humans are truly advanced when we start teaching this sort of thing in Phys Ed.

Hey! I posted that link about a week ago! ;)

I would be alarmed and looking about for the Blair Witch if I saw this with no explaination whilst out walking...

Rockbalancing is so cool!

Yes urbpan, you truly have the rockbalancing bug! It is so exciting. I love the fact that you did them so close to the road, motorists must have been quite puzzled. I can't wait to go balancing with you.

Of course I had to take the urban nature approach!
