1. Name a genre, subgenre, kind, or style of music, and I'll tell you my five favorite artists or albums in that category.

Then, you recommend another one to me!

(I'm bored of the songs on my iPod and I want some well-directed suggestions.) Thanks in advance! And pass this meme on, that's what it's for, plus you might get some good suggestions for yourself. It would also work for movies, books, almost anything, I guess.

Example: You comment with "classic rock." I reply "The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, David Bowie, Queen." You reply to me "Hey, you should get the Las Vegas Circus Soundtrack that's all new mixes of Beatles songs!" (I already have it, but this is just an example._

I'm flattered that you think I would know anything about this genre. Perhaps you could recommend something for beginners?

Pre-1994 Grunge

3. Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream
4. Nirvana Bleach
5. The Fluid Purplemetalflakemusic

I was never a fan of the Pearl Jam/Mother Love Bone/Green River/Temple of the Dog/Alice in Chains type of stuff.

I consider Soundgarden to be a metal band, frequently misclassified as grunge. (and I'm a fan of theirs)

Classical (and if you need me to be more specific- the Baroque period).

From: [identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com
I didn't need you to be more specific! The only baroque I know is JS Bach. Broadening that a little (to include things I've heard of):

1. Fur Elise
2. Moonlight Sonata
3. Rites of Spring
4. The Four Seasons
5. Other stuff I might have heard on the Cosmos Soundtrack.

Progressive Rock

Date: 2007-04-25 05:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com
oo, that's a tough one. I've agreed not to ridicule my wife's voluminous Yes album collection, and I flee from the house if I see her break out the King Crimson. If your definition is broad and generous, I have several Queen albums, a couple Jethro Tull albums, and I used to have 90120 (the only Yes album my wife doesn't like) on cassette tape.

Once I was listening to the Beastie Boys' instrumental music, and a coworker derided it as "Prog Rock Bullshit."

Is there any progressive rock done by 4 piece bands doing 3 minute songs?

Alternately, there are some heavy rock bands in Boston that have done some long form intricate music that I like: Juneau, for example.

I guess you need to recommend prog rock for the non-fan, or the prog rock album you'd recommend as a first listen.
