Out with the old fencing (on the right) in with the new (on the left).

Disgusting substance of the day: Mosquito larva infested water that I dropped my phone into.

What are those pipe-things sticking out of the ground? (And why do they have to be fenced in?)

This is actually the roof of an exhibit which has outdoor cages which lead to subterranean dens with glass windows inside. The pipe is a ventilation pipe leading into the staff area inside the exhibit. The fencing is on the entryway to the fox exhibit. (see my "drumlin underground" and "foxes" tag for more context)

'I dropped my phone in a duck pool' was the finniest thing I'd heard all day-- partly because I imagined it coming up in your phone interview:

Interviewer: "Jef, how are you?"

Jef, nervous: "I dropped my phone in a duck pool. It has larva on it."

But I didn't want to mention that until after the interview was over. Glad it went well.

I used to keep a bucket of water outside for collecting mosquito larvae, for instance I raised some yellow-spotted salamandars from eggs and the "tadpoles" (not really like tadpoles) just loved to munch on the live larvae. Also I'd keep small native fish in aquariums for short periods of time for observation and they required good quality live food. So, since then I always look at stagnant pools full of mosquito larvae with delight. The other larvae I'd get was something that looked like a blood worm (also loved by small aquatic predators). Never hatched any to see what the insect was. Maybe related to black fly but I was in urban parts of Allston at the time which has a very low black fly population (zero).
