How did [livejournal.com profile] rockbalancer and I become such good friends so quickly?

ive noticed those don't do so well in captivity. either that or its normal for a large portion to die, heh, and i dont mean cannabalism

That's been my experience with butterflies. I wonder if most insect young have a really high non-survival rate at the young part of life.

with our mantis', after most of the young ones die out, the rest of them usually die when a molting process goes wrong. they come out of their old shell fucked up and eventually die. and only 4-5 from an eggcasing seem to live till old age, oldest being females.

butterflies, how fun!

I voluntered at a local nature museum. I really enjoyed it, I kind of wish I could have kept doing it. It was a good change of pace from chemical engineering.

Now that you mention it, the chrysallis stage was really a killer too. I could see a lot of kids look dissapointed when the poor thing fell off, and its wings never got expanded.

The ones we hatched mostly ate each other and they had a whole porch to spread out in. Only a few survived.

Hello. Would you mind terribly if I added you to my friends list? I live on the South Shore, and I found you through a link someone had posted on one of the lj gardening communities I belong to. I might be in the suburbs now, but I miss the city, and your 365 species list is wonderful!

I don't mind at all! thanks for asking (and I don't mind if people add me without asking, either).

I was wondering what was up: suddenly 8 or 10 people added me out of the blue! That hasn't happened since I was on lj spotlight.

Someone on our gardening community posted a link. It's an extremely active community, especially this time of year, so you might get some more friends before the day's out.
