More fence work at the Drumlin Underground.

Disgusting substance of the day: the tiny insect I accidentally ate. Actually, it wasn't too bad, but it was a good day in general.

On this day in 365 Urban Species: Green bottle fly. One of those helpful organisms appreciated by forensic entomologists. It has also been used in a medical context: "Approximately 1,000 maggots, 48 hrs old, were placed on the wound daily for 5 days a week, and left for 24 hrs before being replaced by new larvae. The maggots cleaned the entire infected area and healthy granulation appeared after two weeks of treatment (Fig. 2)."

Ecologically it's an important part of the cycle of turning carcasses into smaller, more useful parts, and it helps clean up all that dung that would otherwise clutter everything up. Plus it's pretty.
