All the ash trees at Drumlin Farm are falling down, one by one.

Hidden the roots of this tree: a horseshoe.

Disgusting substance of the day: sandy mud coating my cuffs all day.

On this day in 365 Urban Species: Horseweed. I'm almost positive that the photographs on this entry actually depict toadflax. The two plants look very similar before they flower.

How old that horseshoe must be! How cool to imagine people playing with it a long time ago, and then to have it lost in the weeds, to eventually be found under a big tree! :)

What's the culprit behind the ash trees succumbing to gravity? Emerald ash borer?

Definitely a combination of insects and fungi, but I don't know for sure that we have the Emerald ash borer on site. It wouldn't surprise me--we have the hemlock adelgid, winter moths, and all the other celebrity invasives.
