baby ducks

Disgusting substance of the day: Mealworm goo. My boss said that once a baby bird had been fed mealworms and they didn't die inside the bird, but instead ate their way out of the baby bird, killing it, so she recommended "crushing the heads" of the mealworms. I don't like crushing bugs (I didn't realize this was something I'm squeamish about until today) but I wanted to feed the baby ducks some mealworms. So I snipped their heads off with the poultry shears that we use to chop mice up with. (You know, I was hoping someone would link to this post to [livejournal.com profile] baaaaabyanimals but now I think those people wouldn't want to read this part.) So when I picked up these decapitated mealworms to feed the baby ducks, their sticky white mealworm goo got on my hands, so that's my disgusting substance of the day. Then I found five dollars.

On this day in 365 urban species: Wolf's milk. I actually saw my first wolf's milk of the year this week. (but I didn't photograph it) :(

It does smack of urban legend, but she told it as though it was a first person account.

Edits with long hair may now love me forever.

I would love to visit the baby flamingos!!!

I know we feed waxworms to chicks a lot, because they don't have a hard exosleleton and they're easier to digest. You may want to try getting those - it'd be easier. We had a sick frog and had to rip the legs off the crickets we gave them, and we've had to pop heads off them, too. I hate doing that. It's gross and I feel bad. But, we all gotta eat!

I'll let you know when they start a-hatchin'!

I heard something similar to this with reference to feeding mealworms to amphibians, maybe I read it on the internet...I ended up chopping their heads off with a knife just in case.
