The pattering of fast feet on concrete gets me every time. You had to post these while I am feeling exceptionally hormonal. Damn it. Gorgeous ducklings - and good idea with the door mat up the step. Will remember that one.
These videos are just so cute! :) Dan and I both enjoyed them...I love the second one where you have to show them how to get into the building...hehehe...
First "I Believe" by Manowar pops up on my MP3 player on the way to work, now I get to watch baby duck videos. This is shaping up to be one fantastic Friday!
These are Peking ducks bought from a farm supply store; I suppose momma is on a farm someplace--the eggs are collected and put in an incubator probably. My coworker went to the place and there was a bin with about 25 of them and the store guy reached in and grabbed two for her: "here you go!"
so i absolutely am a huge fan of your LJ - having grown up in the woods and now living in the city, i certainly miss my daily dose of wildlife.
i just had to tell you that i absolutely love this post. i work as a nurse and just had one of the most horrendous shifts of my life, and yet watching these crazy little yellow guys (girls?) was able to make me laugh. the pattering of their feet is fabulous!
Those ducklings move so fast it's like they're on wheels--I love it when they crisscross each other in the first video. And like everyone says, their little slapping feet! Aw, you have two little ducklings as your kids now!
Love your icon btw--ah, Jehovah's Witnesses art!
gross about the mealworms in the last post--or next post (forget which way it goes)
The baby hopping up at the door jam was the cutest thing in the entire world. I hope they stay healthy.
The Riverwalk in San Antonio is asploding with baby ducks right now. They get separated from their mothers very easily because of the tour boat traffic. It is sad to see all those panicking babies. Duck mothers just provide protection though, right? If the babies get past the freaking out stage and stop wasting energy, could they take care of their own needs? It doesn't matter what you really think you should say yes.
Re: All r-selected reproductive strategies soon to end!
I think some species of ducks have daycare systems. I've seen other Momducks take care of someone else's kids when the little peeper's Momduck needed a break. On one memorable occasion I went to a local park and was saddened to see no baby ducks with the Momducks... until I spotted one Momduck with about 30 babies following her. Best as I could figure, every time a little peeper got separated from its Momduck, this other Momduck would pick 'em up and add it to her flotilla. I assume that after their play dates were over they went home to their own Momducks, but they didn't seem to be left to fend on their own, either.
So I don't know if it's always true (because nature is rarely so kind) but it's certainly true *sometimes*, and you can therefore believe that good things happened to the little peepers that got lost.

Great. I am willing to bet, spoiled, pampered, firmly convinced *they* rule the roost. That is good to know, and they can teach children that ducks really are fun. What kind are they?
You will be gratified to know that my 5th grade class found this immensely more rewarding than watching a classmate lip-synch on YouTube. Just picture 25 12 year olds crammed around a laptop, laughing their heads off with glee :)

Can I point friends in this direction, to share the life affirming sound of wee little ducks following their devoted cameraman?
