Discoveries

For the first time (you know if I'd found them last year they would have been in the 365 project) I found an apple snail in Ward's Pond. I haven't done too much research on these. I seem to remember that the group includes the only non-hermaphrodite snails. I don't know if this is likely to be a native or an aquarium release.

This is the first time I've seen Japanese knotweed being put to use as habitat. These are dozens of tiny leeches. They aren't the blood sucking variety, they are detritus feeders. They are clinging to a fallen knotweed leaf in the stream that brings water from Jamaica Pond to Ward's Pond, catching edible particles as they flow by.

The bright sunlight filtering through the knotweed is pretty.

It appears that a skunk (or possibly some other animal) discovered a snapping turtle nest near Leverett Pond.

My favorite view of Leverett Pond, with a new element in the foreground.
