The fitting room at TJMax. I was trying to buy shorts for my trip. I loathe clothes shopping. They did have shorts in a 31 inch waist (a rarity which keeps me from having to wear a belt or bust a button), but one of the two I selected was way looser than the other so I only got one pair. I also tried on some shirts and was amazed at how itchy linen is. I ended up buying the shirt in the picture. (It's rayon, which was comfortable in the store, but might be sweaty in Hawaii.)

On this day in 365 urban species: Hairy galinsoga.

I've found that linen softens up a lot when you wash it several times. It's usually the starch that itches in the store. Don't know if there are any cool thrift stores in your area, but you could try looking for linen shirts there. They're likely to be nicely worn-in and soft.

My fave shirt is one of my dad's old white linen ones. He gave it to me when I was about 16, and it was HUGE on me. The sleeves are still way too long, but I like wearing it over dresses in the summer on cool nights. That, and it reminds me of my dad, which is always a good thing.

Rayon, cotton or silk are pretty standard fabrics for Aloha shirts. I think woven fabrics are much cooler than knit especially in Hawaii. I hope you take tons of pictures!
