I'm still amazed how crowded it is.. the streets are like midtown Manhattan at lunchtime.

I didn't mention (but you probably figured it out from the last post) but this is the view from the hotel. There are better panoramas to take, obviously!

It sounds like a city--strangely for a beach city, there are no gulls. It's 5 a.m. (I know, I know) and I'm hearing lots of other bird song--house sparrows and lots of introduced finches, kind of a constant twitter above the roar of rooftop hvac and cars and buses down on the street. I can't hear or smell the ocean from up here, but I can see it.

It smells pretty good for a city (granted, I've only seen the touristy section so far)--no trash or fish reek, just the faint whiff of cooking oil.

I think you'd love it here. I was just outside in my tshirt and skivvies and I was perfectly comfortable.

Oahu--where honolulu is located--holds about 75% of the state's population. The whole state has a population of about 1.2million. The whoele island's got about 600 square miles to it's name. and there aretwo islands that are larger than it is.

BUt past that... they have done a realyl good job at retaining city development. THe rest of the island has rules and regulations about how big a building can be. a private home can only be 2 stories where I used to live. In the town I grew up in (Kailua) there were only a few tall buildings--2 or 3--and I belive one of them was a medical center (offices, and such, not a hospital) and another was an apartment building.

and when you extend out to the outer islands... well.. the biggest island is 4000 square miles. and only about 160,000 people live there. :)

Paradise is still winning, and it'll continue to do so. Just not in the msot densely populated areas.

Very true. My parents go there often enough for pleasure/business trips, and the most that was ever brought back for me was a Beanie Baby from the Honolulu airport a couple of years back, because I'm ten years old. The only thing I usually ask of from people on trips is photos, but they insist on spending $15 on something I'll give away.
