The baby ducks are only about 8 weeks old, but they are bigger than all the other ducks.
On this day in 365 Urban Species: The Sickener, another fungus species eluding us this relatively rainless summer. (I saw a relative of it at Drumlin yesterday, mostly eaten away.)

Date: 2007-07-25 03:14 pm (UTC)This afternoon was a typical South Florida summer afternoon. Hot, muggy, disgusting, followed by a mid afternoon downpour, followed by sunshiny showers, followed by a spectacular double rainbow after supper. I decided to chase the rainbow, which seemed to be hovering somewhere over the Atlantic. I got in the car and went to the beach. It was pretty deserted except for a couple of surfers and a lone pair of necking teenagers. I started walking down the beach along the margin of the surf, and something up ahead caught my eye. Something moving. Something rather tiny. As I got closer I realized that I had come upon the hatching of a family of seas turtles! There were about 25 of them making their way from their nest up by the bank down to the water. They were adorable! About 1 ½ inches long! They were toddling along on really cute teeny-tiny flippers. This was a wonderful thing to see since the turtles are endangered because of rampant development along the beaches. Palm Beach County has wisely outlawed all lights on the beaches during turtle nesting season (now). The turtles know that they have to go towards something shiny (the water) and the lights confuse them. They go towards the lights (condos) and die because they’re out of their natural element. So this law seems to be working. At least 25 baby turtles slipped into the ocean tonight and went off to do whatever it is baby turtles are supposed to do!
