I rode to the zoo yesterday morning (as part of my project to get into shape to return to bicycle commuting) and it only took 20 minutes! We'll see how it goes when there's traffic to deal with, too. On the return trip I saw a big bird on a street sign, and momentarily assumed it was someone's art. I stopped and looked back, and saw a couple of mockingbirds harassing this juvenile red-tailed hawk:

The Green Street subway station is behind the hawk. The hawk is looking up at his antagonists.

I'm always surprised to see red-tailed hawks around here. I see them often enough that it shouldn't surprise me, but it always does.

A few years ago, I was walking towards the bus stop, and I got *buzzed* by a hawk. It flew just inches away from my ear, making this buzzing noise that went straight to my bones.

Oh, look at her little face! I love the juveniles so much; so clean-looking and bendy.

We see them more often than the adults, because they're stupid inexperienced and get themselves into all sorts of trouble.

Shouldn't you be sleeping?

Perhaps the mocking birds were enforcing the 'No stopping at any time' sign, which the hawk is so cheekily contravening :)

So was it a dry run, or did you work yesterday? Green Street to the zoo is a pretty nice walk, so you could always bike there and walk the rest of the way, if you wanted to. There are also buses to the zoo from Forest Hills and Jackson Square.

Nope, I'm just getting myself ready for bicycling, and (more importantly) getting to work at seven. My orientation is tomorrow (I'm actually not sure what time--any idea?) and my first day is the Monday following.

I'm on the Green line (Longwood/Brookline Village) so public transportation seems like it would be pretty annoying. The drive is only ten minutes, but I'm planning on trying to bike as often as I can.
