Grevy's zebra Equus grevyi

Endangered by hunting and competition with domestic livestock, Grevy's zebra are found only in small arid zones in Ethiopia and Kenya. Unlike other zebra, Grevy's guard territories with water sources rather than mates. They are the largest of the wild equids, with stallions reaching nearly 1000 pounds.

Franklin Park Zoo has several Grevy's zebras housed along with Wildebeests and other African plains animals in the Serengeti Crossing exhibit.



On this day in 365 Urban Species: Spotted sandpiper. We've been seeing a lot of these along the Muddy River lately.

Lovely picture, but that's not a Grevy's. That's a Grant's zebra. We have 1.5.0 Grant's zebras and we haven't had a foal in like ten years. Some of the mares look like they might be in foal every so often (and management goes bananas with anticipation) but they're just fat and full of hay. 8-)

I won't argue, since I'm no expert. I'm a little confused, because there's only one Grant's mare at the zoo, and I thought she was in holding. I figured all the zebras out that day were Grevy's.

So you got lucky. 8-) I look forward to pictures of Grevy's. We haven't had Grevy's here in like 15 years. (Hunh! My International Wildlife Encyclopedia spells it Grévy's.)
