Things starting to look worse for SFZoo...

This article shows that the barrier at the tiger enclosure is not as high as was earlier claimed, and the report of a shoe and blood past the barrier fence was not true. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bicoastal for the heads up.

"The zoo was just moving past controversy over the highly publicized deaths of two elephants in 2004 that prompted it to move its remaining elephants to an animal sanctuary."

Do you know what happened to their elephants?

The same kind of thing happened in the STL zoo earlier this year. I remember being there and seeing the protesters dressed in black with their posters about Clara. So sad. I'm never going back to that zoo ever again.

I was there and saw the elephants in 2004 (not sure if before or after the deaths, were those the only ones they owned?) and the one I saw was laying down all sick and sad...it was horrifying...I hate that zoo, always have...I only liked it when I went in the 90s and they had the white alligator...but he was only a traveling exhibit and they took better care of him than what they owned...very stupid and sad.
The Oakland Zoo is way better and have their asses on straight...:P

I think the white alligator was on loan from the St Augustine Alligator Farm. That damn thing traveled everywhere!

I have an LJ friend that is interning at the SF Zoo right now. I feel bad for her. She seems to be taking it hard.

Yea I heard he traveled the whole US! Dang...;)
Wow that sucks...I considered interning there, but they don't have elephants (which is a good thing) so I went to Oakland which is SO much better...I heard they are shutting the zoo down indefinitely...:(

Why are you surprised?

I just thought they would have it closed longer, due to all their issues...I didn't think anyone would want to go back this soon...But I did find out the cat exhibit is closed until further notice...

Yeah, they probably have to keep the tiger exhibit closed until they can make some modifications to get it up to standards.

I'm troubled by the noises that the two boys in the hospital haven't cooperated with investigators... I suspect it will turn out the low wall, combined with one or more of the kids doing something stupid, led to this situation. Very sad, all round.
