No I'm not talking about the caucus results (of which I'm ignorant--I can wait until my commute to hear that) or the fact that the temperature is once again four degrees, no I've been looking at my friends list for 5 minutes and I've already found two of the weirdest nature stories I've ever seen!

Plankton growth spurt causes increase in rock-burrowing crustaceans. Island soon to erode away.

Cow-eating trees feared in India! This isn't really news as much as cryptobotony. Do a google search for "Pili mara" or "Tiger tree" for more info.

Caiman apparantly unhurt in 12 story fall in Russian Nuclear Center.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] invertebrates, [livejournal.com profile] wtf_nature, and [livejournal.com profile] drhoz for entertaining my morning.

Of course some spoilsports had to post the preliminary caucus results. The nonsense words "Huckabee" and "Obama" seem to be the Iowans' favorite, who we must remember, live in a state called "Iowa."

Sorry, babe, didn't mean to ruin your morning. I hope you didn't click on the link.

I think you have a point about Iowa not being able to vote at all. Hucklebee, indeed. I was pissed because it seems like the candidates that have celebrity backing won. It just validates my opinion that people have become to stupid to vote for themselves, so they rely on celebrities to tell them who to vote for and why.

I'm too scared to look at the nature stories - cow eating trees, jeezum crow, what's next?! Maybe that's how you felt about the caucus.

Pshaw, 12 stories is nothing - did you see yesterday's NYTimes article on the guy who survived a 47-story fall? He wasn't unhurt, but he lived!

WHAT THE HELL was a Caiman doing at a Nuclear Center in the first place? Looks like I'll have to click the link.

And oh, yeah, evaluating politics based on the phonetic/poetic qualities of the names sounds great...let's base democracy off of that now. :D

I called "bullshit" on the tiger tree a few months back, mostly because the only "evidence" is the same ridiculous video that's been blogged over and over since September. The fact that it's making the rounds again is what I like to call "blog churn", where people who didn't catch the meme the first time round start a whole new cycle by reaching a whole new contingent of readers...and a lot of folks who forgot that they'd read about it before.

I noticed that phenomena, too. Good term for it...

Dash it all! I missed it when you posted it. I hate to be on the rewash cycle of a blog churn. I still have friends emailing me pictures of the hippo and tortoise together.

Don't sweat it: if I remember correctly, you had enough on your plate at that time. Besides, I'll take the tiger tree story seriously once I read about it in a real news venue, and it includes pictures other than from that damn video.
