Jim goes to Rollerderby

I took Jim to a Boston Derby Dames bout last night. Jim actually belongs to my good friend, dogsitter, and drinkin' buddy Alex ([livejournal.com profile] belen1974), who is also a scorekeeper. I watched the bout while Jim slept. It was the Comonaughties versus the Wicked Pissahs. I chose to root for the Pissahs, for a couple reasons: their team name (derived from a typical New Englander's accented evaluation of how good something is) as well as their symbol. I can't seem to find a large version of it, but it pictures a gull entangled in a six-pack holder. I wholeheartedly support the use of local urban wildlife in sports team iconography. Their mascot, pictured above leading the pack, is "Sully tha Gully.

In between game periods, Alex took Jim outside to socialize and pee and stuff. "

The gameplay was fast-paced and full-contact. One player went head-first into the bleachers and left on a stretcher. (I've since learned that she's okay.)

At one point I heard someone call my name. It was [livejournal.com profile] mandy_moon, who wasn't sure she recognized me until she saw the tiny dog I was carrying. We discussed lj, and how we can't post about the interesting things at our workplaces (she works with lab monkeys) and I announced I would post a picture of her and [livejournal.com profile] dosboof.

After the game (the Pissahs clobbered them) everyone went down to the floor to mix and socialize. The head ref brought his dog, a pitbull dressed as a ref.

Jim and the "Rufferee," whose name I believe is Vadar, got along great.

Finally, Alex and Jim posed for novelty photos.

Pictures with the dogs are quite adorable.

I'm actually supposed to be learning how to skate today so I can become a Derby girl but it's like, four degrees outside with snow and my trainer lives an hour away and I don't want him to have to drive in this crap.

Yep. Toledo, OH is forming a league and I so want to be a part of it.

YAY roller derby!!!

Hey, that's a pretty good picture you took of us. So you heard she's ok? She was the one player that on the team that I knew. I thought it was a great time until the auditorium took on this ominous tone while everyone tried to figure out whether or not she was ok. I also remember that when they wheeled her out, she really didn't look that good. Anyway, I'm glad to hear she's not horribly injured or anything.

Well, I'm still waiting on official word, but what I heard that night was that it was a cut on her head.

You guys are pretty photogenic. :)

Woops a little more serious than I thought: (info thanks to alex)

from the bdd website: Thanks to everyone who has expressed concern for Wicked Pissah MVP Evilicious, who left last night's bout in an ambulance after taking a hard hit into the wall late in the third period. She's at home sipping martinis through a straw while recovering from having broken her nose in four places and getting more than 30 stitches in her face. Broken and bruised, but more evil than ever.

Ah man, you guys have a much better arena than we do. We don't even have any bleachers to crash into.

Also, I understand that roller derby girls run the gummet of non traditional looks, but yoicks, Sully the Gully is one ugly broad.

It's in the Shriner's Arena. The Shriners were very nice. There were 1600 people there! Where do the vegas rollergirls play?

They play in a run down roller rink in Commercial Center, that run down collection of strip malls we spent so much time at during your wedding (Thai food and pool hall). I doubt we have 400 people at ours.

Aw the ref dog is super cute! I just love the last pic too...
I didn't realize Jim was not your dog...why do you and Alexis have him then?
I always wanted to go to a roller derby! I wonder if there is one near me...;)

We're taking care of him while he's house training and such, but he'll eventually live with Alex.

Thanks for the links...Dan's aunt is actually on a Roller Derby squad or team or whatever you call them so he was telling me about them...:)
Oh I see...that's nice of you! :)

Rollergirls! Cool! I would sooo play that if it existed in my country. Actually I met a girl in London about a year ago who said she was moving to Dublin and was going to set it up, but Dublin is still too far away for me.

Hey! I added you. I figured that if you're gonna post pictures of me I'd better keep an eye on you. Heh, actually I read your posts over Becky's shoulder all the time, so this ought to at least help me annoy her less.
