Walking the dogs on the island (the dry part of the swamp across the street) I heard a male red-wing blackbird calling.

I heard a woodpecker today for the first time in many months.

Was it the ear-grating "oggaCHEEEEEEEEEE" call or the sweet, high pitched "chee chee" call?

It was a few weak practice runs of "Conk-a-REEEEE!"

(also, I have an lj friend called [livejournal.com profile] okaree, referring to the same call)

Oooh neat...I heard some bats last night...and birds, I don't get why they sing at night. Maybe someone owns some...

For the past few weeks there have been huge mixed flocks of starlings (I think) and red-winged blackbirds hanging around here. They slowly fill up the trees around the house, then land, chasing away all the other birds. They eat and make a lot of racket, then kind of all explode into the air at the same time.

My sign that spring is here is the red winged blackbird... I was thrilled the other day though to have a flock of cedar waxwings in the yard.

That is lucky! We used to get them down here sometimes but not for a couple of years now.
