Here are some things I learned recently.

Bats are a real pain to take care of. At least, moving one hundred bats from one enclosure to another is a real pain. Aemii's zoo should get a lot of credit for dealing with these freaks every day. Although mine are microchiroptera, which makes some difference probably.

Portland Oregon is so nature-friendly that goats take the bus.

New Zealand has a children's hospital called "the Starship," which I learned from the sentence, "The child wandered into the dog's area and was attacked, suffering quite serious injuries and has been taken to the Starship"

It's my brother's birthday tomorrow. I knew that, but I suddenly remember it every June. So wish him a happy one, because he carries a machine gun.

I love animal-rescue police calls. Once I was taking a class about the dispatch system, and we logged on to look at a sample call. We happened on one about ducklings stuck in a grate, and the class was completely derailed until we got the update that the ducks were okay again.

Which species were you working with? We don't normally move 100 bats in a day. We have about 250 individual bats total (12 different species). The biggest move I have participated in so far was 20-30 bats. Our bats are probably at least slightly more accustomed to human interaction than yours, and they are also larger, so I think this would make them easier to capture and handle. Ours are pretty good about shifting indoors when it's "cold" in the winter. The trick I have found is to grab them when they are on a vertical surface, since they have to be hanging to take off.

I stumbled upon this POLLEN ATLAS OF BAT-POLLINATED PLANTS OF CENTRAL FRENCH GUIANA when I was looking for references for a pollination program I am working on. Perhaps Carollia perspicillata pollinate some of these plants, since their range extends into the area. I don't see myself using the the "pollen atlas" for any practical purpose, but I think the pictures are pretty cool.

Now now, you can't carry machine guns in public places in Nevada. You can carry a side arm, but it has to be in plain sight, unless you have a concealed carry permit.

Microbats can be harder as far as moving goes, I'd imagine. How are you doing it? Are they cute?? Did they all survive so far??

Yea I don't deal with bats a lot, but when I do it's kind of ridiculous...and they are tiny, [livejournal.com profile] aemiis_zoo deals with the big ones...haha
