The wood frog (Rana sylvatica) is the most northern occurring amphibian in North America. It requires vernal pools (bodies of water that do not have water in them year-round, and therefore have fewer predators, particularly fish) to breed. We have a man-made vernal pool on our work property, and this week a nocturnal migration of froglings happened. There must have been hundreds of tiny frogs, leaving the water for a mostly terrestrial life, only to return to breed again. The subterranean exhibit building I work with (The "Drumlin Underground") trapped about 30 wood froglings. We were able to rescue and release most of them.

That is the cutest thing. Vernal ponds are wonderful. We have a few around here as well.
