It's been Baby Slug Time at our place!! We always see them on the retaining wall of our building this time of year, but they haven't been there the past couple of years, so we were relieved to see them again. AND baby snails with teeny tiny little shells!! SO CUTE!!
I was at an otherwise boring party a few weeks ago, and suddenly, a previously unenthusiastic carouser noticed with great glee and wonder that a pair of leopard slugs had begun their majestic hermaphroditic mating bounce 'n tangle number. Pointing and shouting, he called forth a throng of onlookers. The two entwined lovers were all a-glisten, awash in mucous, a gooey double-helix of passion, undulating gently and rhythmically up and down on their thin thread, dangling from the furrowed trunk of a tree. The party gasped in collective amazement and unabashed voyeurism. An art student flashed black and white erotic photographs. I found myself (unwittingly) narrating the scene, as many party-goers directed frantic, bewildered questions to the open air, never having witnessed such a spectacle. I began, to the best my knowledge, answering their breathless, child-like queries. This captivating display held a drunken horde's attention for what felt like a quarter of an hour, with some stragglers remaining to see the act through completion as both post-coital slug-lovers retracted their slimy genital-bundles after disentangling. Needless to say, what would have been an uninspiring night was wholly salvaged by this scene.
