Eck not Ick
Sep. 11th, 2008 09:10 pmHey, if you would rather not look at a fly larva living in the flesh of a living mammal, how about looking at my friend Jason's excellent illustration work? He might be the only person I know that still buys ink, like in a bottle. He's now an award-winning editorial cartoonist in New Bedford, and has done illustrations for Necronomicon Press and did some wonderful comics for my anthology back when I was doing that. He was able to render the most intricate cartoons in a dark room full of jostling drunks. I miss him, but he's promised to come up and visit soon. He was the first "stranger" that came into my house that Charlie greeted like an old friend.

Also....in that same vein...would you have any advice for an aspiring graphic designer in finding a job?
Brian's brother is an excellent artist, with a degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He's been out of school for awhile and hasn't found any jobs in his field so he's had to work in a factory in order to support his family.
I feel so bad for him. He's really talented and it seems like it's all going to waste.

Date: 2008-09-12 09:37 am (UTC)Graphic Designers at least have an edge over those of us from a fine arts background, but I'm sure it's difficult for them, too. A lot of it has to do with where you live, I imagine, and if he already has a family, he's less flexible than a single guy who could move to where there's more work. If he still has any energy after working at his factory job, he could try to get work on the side in the evenings or whatever, doing contract work. He could try to find one time assignments on Craigs list and hope that one turns into a more full time thing.
I wish for the best, but it's not easy.
