Dogtown 08

This past Sunday, Alex and Jim and Charlie and I went to Dogtown. Alexis and Maggie stayed home because of Maggie's hurt leg. Dogtown is a former colonial village that was abandoned around the time of the Revolutionary war. It's a great place to hike, and a favorite place for us to take our dogs because we can take them off leash. Unfortunately, the secret is out--this sign is new, and we saw many more people on this visit than any other. Hopefully it will still be a favorite hiking place for us as long as we stay in New England.

First weekend of November and stil there are a lot of leaves left on the trees.

Numerous old stone fences cross through the forest.

I was most taken with the American beech leaves.

I climbed a rock but no one else wanted to come up there.

I found this cranberry sesame brownie on a lichen covered rock. It tasted like raccoon scat, though.

Charlie was happy to find a stream to drink from.

Tannins from the leaves stained it the color of tea.

We found an old dam which was like a raised paved path in the forest.

Charlie sees something in the woods!

A decomposing ATV is one of the more contemporary ruins at Dogtown.

After a while we got really really lost. I didn't take too many pictures after that, since we were trying to find a way back.

Eventually, with help from other hikers, we found our way back to the main path!
