After the brakes were fixed, we continued with our original plan. The Mt. Misery Conservation Area in Lincoln, Mass.
Mt. Misery is described as "a modest hill covered with a dense pine forest," and is a favorite for dog owners in the Metro West area.

You can't go too far in any direction before you wind up on someone's property.

We ended up on a dirt road cul-de-sac, trespassed a bit to try to find our way back, but instead found this beautiful pond, with kayakers:

Back to the trail.

I post more pictures of myself holding amphibians...
Bufo americanus

Another pond.

We were trying to get to the dog swimming hole--this isn't it--while avoiding other dogs.

Charlie decided this was the swimming hole!

Underneath the log I was sitting on: Lycogala epidendrum, a slime mold (a protist, not a fungus--if you really want a primer, check here: http://www.hiddenforest.co.nz/slime/) with the common name "wolf's milk."

Happily, we found the real swimming hole, and Charlie went for a long solo swim.

It's so nice to tire out the kids.

Of course, cross-posted to
