My list of upcoming dvds is long and weird, and in no particular order. I'm curious if any of you have an opinion as to what I should see NOW, or at least sooner rather than later. What, on this list, do you think I should move up to the front of the queue?

(I've marked a couple discs as material that I've already seen, but I'm seeing again for whatever reason; but the others are movies I have never seen--that's right, I've never seen Apocalypse Now. For some reason that surprises people.)

And you can probably take Black Adder off your queue.

Apocalypse Now ... I'm just going to say this movie traumatized me for the rest of my life.

Daredevil ... one of the worst superhero movies I have ever seen. Period.

Hero ... was slow sometimes, but really good.

Well, High Fidelity has to be one of my all-time favorite movies AND Books, but I am quite partial to Nick Hornby and other English writers. :-) But it is an absolute MUST SEE.

Enteral Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was also really, really good.

Evil Dead SUCKS ass, but Evil Dead 2 is quite a bit better and basically the exact same movie and, of course, Army of Darkness is a work of comidic genius.

For Seabiscuit, don't see the movie, just read the book. It is much, much better.

Shrek 2 is also in my top 20. It is hilarious and engaging and.. I just love it all over.

I really enjoyed Alien vs. Predator. For what it was, I thought it worked really well and was very interesting. I <3 the Predator.

The Village sucked, and I am a HUGE M. Night Shamalyan fan.... The idea was really good it just wasn't executed well.

Sideways rocked. It's a must-see. But very weird, too.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou... I don't even know what to say. A lot of it was really boring... but it had it's moments. I think it was by the same guy who did The Royal Tenebaums, which was SO, so much better.

Dark City... you haven't seen that? Hmmm... very unique. I enjoyed it, although it had it's crappy moments, too.

Constantine.... Surprisingly, I really liked this. I felt like Keanu Reeves did a really good job, especially because he plays the same chatacrer in every film. It just worked in this one.

I have seen some of these others, too... Ocean's Tweve, Pitch Black, Spirit, What About Bob, Solider, The Bourne Identity, Antz... I just couldn't think of anything good or bad to say about them. Bug's Life is way better than Antz... I dunno... I just realized this comment was way too long so I am just going to post it.

I'm making him see Dark City because the Matrix was just a crappy version of it.

Did you read Hellblazer?

Date: 2005-07-14 06:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lostnorange.livejournal.com
No, I haven't read that... But I think I will have to watch Dark City again because I don't know if I think it's better than the Matrix or not.

Thanks!
I feel like I have to see Daredevil. I actually enjoyed "The Hulk," which everyone seems to have hated (not that it couldn't have been a million times better...)
But you will notice that "Elektra" and "The Punisher" are absent. Even a comic book geek can only take so much.

So to boil it down you'd say:
1. High fidelity
2. Shrek 2
3. Eternal Sunshine
4. Hero
5. Alien vs Predator

Date: 2005-07-14 06:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lostnorange.livejournal.com
Hmmm... I don't even know what to say about Hulk. I just saw Fantasic Four and I have decided that everything after Spiderman has gone down Hill. Even the new Batman was god-awful.

Have you seen Army of Darkness by any chance?

Firefly - The movie comes out in September, so you might want to finish the series before then.
Garden State and The Station Agent - I really enjoyed these two, and they both take place in New Jersey. They share a similar kind of melancholy angsty mood.
Adaptation has a wacky naturalist/botanist, but I actually found the movie kind of annoying.
Super Size Me was good and frightening and will reinforce all those superior yet often true urban stereotypes of the rest of the country that you may hold (if that makes any sense).
Classics I'd add - Seven Samurai (only movie over 3 hours I've seen that could have lasted longer and I'd still want to watch), Blade Runner (c'mon it's a sci fi classic, and you've got to see it in better circumstances), and Harold & Maude (another classic)

From: [identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com
Thanks for the reminder about Firefly. I'll accelerate those discs.

I'm interested in the good-ish artyish movies you mention (I put them in my queue, after all), but I'm concerned that [livejournal.com profile] cottonmanifesto will hate them. She's not big on melancholy angsty stuff (at least not if there aren't replicants involved).

I second the Firefly series and otherwise I would say The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou over and over again until you see it. (although it's a movie that really benefits from a big screen)

Then I'd pick Station Agent over Garden State. My non-angsty husband enjoyed it. It's more quirky and adult. Garden State was more whiny.

Life Aquatic didn't do a lot for me.

If you like weird, dark, science fiction series, have you seen Farscape?

I echo Miz Geek's comments:

Station Agent is very, very good. Excellent, I'd say. Quite funny and very moving too.
Garden State was good but more predictable. Also funny, in that odd arty way.
DareDevil sucks. Sucks. Really sucks. I was sort of forced to look at it on planes both to Portland, Oregon, and back from Oregon. I watched it the first time. Ouch.
I (Love) Huckabees was pretty good. I was hoping for a little more depth to the philosophy, but it's still ok. Funny, too.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Timechasers was awful, in that MST3K way. Features lots of bicycles. And badly animated dinosaurs.
Life Auquatic was so annoying I stopped watching it halfway through. And that was about an hour after I wanted to stop watching it. It was just so damn depressing. I don't know if it got better in the end though.

Huh. I thought Life Aquatic was hysterically funny, beautiful and moving, but I'm pretty deadpan. I liked the Station Agent a ton as well, but thought that one was slow and really, really depressing. I thought Garden State took a lot of easy shortcuts, and Zach Braph thinks he's far more profound than he really is. And Daredevil sucked out loud. :)

I don't have much worthwhile to add, except that my queue is worse than yourse - 384 discs between two profiles (one for movies, one for tv series.)

Also mad props for all the MST3K.

A damn fine list

Date: 2005-07-15 06:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] brush-rat.livejournal.com
I've copied your list as it looks like there a few leads to some cool stuff I'd never heard of or have forgotten about. I'll try to limit myself to commenting on the ones I've actually seen.

3. Soap: Season 1-This is what's great about TV on DVD
6. Adaptation -More about the writing process than botany, but a damn good film
7. Caveman -Haven't seen it, can't imagine what the appeal is (damn there goes that limitation.)
12. Apocalypse Now-Don't feel bad, I haven't seen this yet either
16. Darkman-I've seen it, I have no recollection of what it's about, except that I seem to remember it opening with a torture scene that would do your man Tarantino proud
19. Daredevil-It's not the worst comic movie ever made, but only because there are so many other awful candidates (Punisher, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Punisher again etc.
22. MST 3000: Boggy Creek II- I've talked to several people who were around eight when"The Legend of Boggy Creek" came out, and they were all universally scarred by it. Yes that's scarred as well as scared.
23. Dawn of the Dead (original)-Great zombie flick, but you'll find yourself shouting at the TV. No you idiots, don't split up now, fortify the perimeter!
27. Hero-A good martial arts flick until they start repeating the story from different viewpoints, at which point it becomes a great martial arts flick.
32. Jackie Chan's First Strike-I haven't been able to find this locally, which is why I suspect netflicks will devastate video stores.
35. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-Hey, Jim carey can act when he's not using his ass as a puppet. If I ran an art movie house, I'd put it on a double bill with Memento
37. Fahrenheit 9/11-I'm stunned that you haven't seen this. Great movie. Great propaganda, and still we ended up with president rainman
39. Cirque du Soleil: Varekai-Own it, Haven't watched it. Every Cirque show I've seen on tape captures maybe a hundredth of the experience of seeing the live show. Fortunately, with Cirque, that's enough
40. The Last Temptation of Christ- No interest in seeing a two hour snuff flick. I recommend replacing it in your queue with Jesus Christ Superstar
41. High Fidelity-Very good. It's hard to go wrong with Nick Horn and or John Cussack
42. Ocean's Eleven-The original or the remake? Both capture a sort of studied cool, but it feels more manufactured in the remake.
51. The Fly / The Fly 2-Didn't see the sequel, but you in particular should see the first one.
52. Pitch Black-Don't waste your time with the sequel, but a pretty decent horror flick. Riddick is probably the best anti hero in years
More to come

More of a damn fine list

Date: 2005-07-15 06:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] brush-rat.livejournal.com
53. The Road Warrior-surely you've seen this. Really? Yeah it's worth the two hours.
55. The Evil Dead-I saw this one summer when some friends and I were watching tons of b horror films. I remember turning to my friends and saying "Did I really just watch a woman getting raped by a tree?" I agree that the remake... uh I mean evil dead II is better.
57. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen- Ooof. Brace yourself for the pain. Some nice acting, fun concept, but no where near as good as the books. You need a heaping dollop of willing suspension of disbelief to get through this one. Good lord, they take the Nautilus through the canals of Venice. On the plus side, it did inspire me to read the Picture of Dorian Gray
60. The Pink Panther (seen it)-I need a list of good caper flicks. I love good caper flicks.
62. The Man Who Knew Too Little- A fun little flick. Very underrated. On a similar note I reccommend Quick Change, also with Bill Murray
65. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (seen it)-I still like it, but the last time I watched it everyone else in the room found it horribly dated.
68. Road to Perdition-One of the best comic book movies ever. It actually resolves itself a bit neater than the comic.
74. Shrek 2 -Great soundtrack. Okay movie. Actually a very good animated film, much better that most, but the original set the mark pretty high.
75. Seven Samurai-Great film. Feels long to my western sensibilities. I keep meaning to rent Hollywood's cowboy remake of it, the Magnificent Seven
77. Land of the Lost (seen it)- I have a friend who is deeply enamored of this show and is aghast that the movie version will probably be a comedy. Apparently they had some big gun SF writers working on the TV show.
78. 1984-At this point, it's practically a documentary.
82. Schoolhouse Rock! (seen it)-Still great fun and great edutainment. One of the Few DVD's I've paid full price for.
84. Blade Runner (saw it under worst of circumstances)-Well, okay, what were the circumstances?
88. Bonus Material: Schoolhouse Rock!-Umm, this is a separate rental? weird. It's good. The added songs are not as good as the classic stuff.
90. MST3K: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians -Pop quiz: what was Pia Zadora's first film. Second pop quiz: who the hell is Pia Zadora?
98. Jabberwocky -Umm... He got better. Probably only worth seeing as a historical relic.
105. Black Adder -yep, good stuff, I need to get a hold of this as well as I've only seen scattered episodes.
113. Sideways- I may be the only person in America who didn't like this film. The main characters are Pathetic, whiney and loathsome, and not in a good way. That being said, there is some great writing in it.
143. The Bourne Identity-Enjoyable, well done. Good movie when your in the mood for an action flick
148. Antz -ehn
149. Constantine-Better than I expected. Of all the changes they made the one I like the least is not making him a manipulative insufferable prick.
151. Duel-I barely remember this one, but I saw it when it was on TV originally, like 30 years ago. It's supposed to be a classic and if you insist on watching Spielberg and Lucas' first films, I can gaurantee you'll enjoy this a hell of a lot more than THX 1138.

37. I put it in the queue before the election. After the election, I felt like it would just be too painful, so I put it way way back (hopefully it'll arrive right around the next election).

40. Not the Mel Gibson violence one that the Christians liked but the Scorcese sex one that the Christians got angry about.

42. The remake. I forget why we are going to watch it. I could barely care less about it honestly.

51. Never saw either. Both are on the same disc.
