I think there are probably lots of people who enjoy watching their antics, and there are some academics studying squirrel behavior.
Birding is a little different because there are many species to observe, and the species make-up changes over time. There's a bit of the stamp collector in many birders, traveling around to find certain species and fill up a list.
I never thought about the stamp collector connection but it makes a lot of sense.
In case you're interested, here's a link to an article that says there is a correlation between temperature and the number of kids bitten by dogs. It mentions Pit Bulls as being "the breed most commonly cited as the cause for the attack."
