i have seen a "murder of crows" assault a squirrel, knocking it out of a tree, pinned it to the ground, and then they mobbed, and turned it into furry sushi morsels. kinda ... creepy.

I knew they were carnivores (shellfish) but didn't realize they would go after another bird! I knew crows did but I had no idea that gulls would eat smaller birds too.
Wow, that's Herring Gulls for you. I did some field work on them last summer, and I'm not particularly surprised that they'd take a songbird when given the chance. The Great Black-backed Gulls frequently took eider chicks and I saw both Herring Gulls and Great Black-backed Gulls going after muskrats (and sometimes eating them).
