Noticing the year, first week of June 2009
Jun. 6th, 2009 09:13 amSnapping turtle laying eggs directly across from my house.
I kind of wish I had a little fence to put around the nest, but it probably isn't necessary. I would guess that our snapping turtle population is in pretty good balance, and the nest location is a very bad one fence or no fence. It's right at a place where people (including us) come across the street to pee their dogs. If it isn't trampled, killed by dog urine, or dug up by a dog, a skunk will probably eat the eggs. Any way, it's nice to see that there is a breeding population of New England's largest reptile in New England's biggest city.
