Highlights of yesterday

Finally got around to transposing writing from paper notebook into the computer, with an eye on (*gasp*) producing another issue of my zine (I do a zine?)

Received densely packed box of books and other objects from my brother, [livejournal.com profile] brush_rat, including compilation of excellent comic strip "Maakies," and most effeminate Micronaut ever. It looks like C3P0 imitating Cher on roller skates. He lords over the tiny apes and bobble-head alligators on the computer decoration shelf, raising his forlorn stump (one arm is busted).

Whilst assembling an impromptu "log henge" in the park, dropped heavy log on big toe, resulting in painful, unattractive, but thankfully minor, injury.

Sulked at home while doting wife wondered how I managed to get seven tattoos with a pain tolerance as low as mine. (hint: no tattoos under toenails)

Rode bikes with wife (!) into Allston. After a late breakfast, went to the Super 88. I was looking for the delicious (really) vegetarian jerky made from mushrooms that I have had before, but they only had the much inferior tofu version. As I'm spending most of next week on airplanes, I bought three packs. We also gawked at the exotic items in the freezers such as vegetarian ham, vegetarian eel substitute and entire mock lobsters. (Now you shall have a B52's song, with the wrong lyrics, in your head.) Highlights from the genuine meat department included all kinds of pig organs, huge beef tongues, 2 lb. packages of much smaller duck tongues, and most exciting to me, entire frozen pigeons (plucked and gutted, but with head and feet).

Hobbled around Ward's Pond with dogs. A very forward Katydid jumped on the wife, and then stuck around for photographs.

Hobbling back home, encountered injured chickadee. Moved bird off path to peaceful recovery or horrible death. (None of my business which.)

Spent evening at Flann O'Brein's Pub with lovely friends who had nothing better to do on a Monday night than get schnackered, and enjoy stories and laughter.

Wife and I fell into one another's arms to the sound of beautiful violent thunderstorm.

I love the Super 88! Stuff there is so cheap. I didn't realize they had the whole fake meat section, I'll have to check it out. Although, the entire fake lobster sounds quite scary.

Have you ever eaten at the Grasshopper? It's my favorite restaurant ever!

For fake meat - nothing beats quorn as a chicken substitute or the fantastic brand mix TVP stuff for taco meat substitute. They have fake spam stuff at the 88 which we hope will be like the 'vegetarian ham' that Brown Sugar Cafe (better than Grasshopper because I can eat meat there) serves in lieu of actual meat.

I'm a big fan of the Fantastic Brand in general. Yum.

I've never been to the Brown Sugar Cafe...I drag my extremely carnivorous fiance to the Grasshopper whenever I can convince him to go. Since it causes him severe digestive upset, he's *oddly enough* never as excited as I am!

I like their sloppy joe mix for meat sauce for spaghetti (mixed with regular red sauce).

I highly recommend brown sugar if you like thai food. I mean HIGHLY.

Grasshopper doesn't give me a tummy ache usually. Suggest the beef lomein next time you're there as it has less fake meat and more noodles.

Oh, and it's very nice to hear of another mixed couple out and about in the world. :)

It's all about the pasta. :)

I just ate pasta for lunch! Yum!

I'm actually not a full vegetarian...yet. I still (hanging my head) eat chicken, crab, lobster, and shrimp on occasion, but pretty rarely. No beef, no pork, no fish. I stopped eating beef 'bout 10-11 yrs ago, pork sometime around '96, and never ever liked fish. In fact, in my baby book it says that I refuse to eat any type of meat.

I've got to get better about eating healthy alternatives before I can completely stop eating any meat altogether.

Jeff does make faces, though, when I make such delicacies as "Fake Meatloaf!"

Yeah, I think the bugs are OK to eat and Jef (my Jef) might think it was ok too if they didn't taste so fishy.

I was actually JUST thinking about making fake meatloaf! How do you make yours? I was gonna use gimme lean ground beef mixed with regular onion soup mix.

I bought some packaged kind from Vegan Essentials. Have you ever gotten any of their stuff? I'm a huge fan of their vegan marshmellows -- I can have rice krispie treats again! Yup, I eat chicken but I don't eat gelatin (or at least try my hardest not to!). I'm odd.

Be careful with onion soup mix, lots of it has beef in it.

I've never had the Gimme Lean beef kind of stuff, just their fake sausage, which is really good.

That's funny because Jefs much more likely to eat gelatin than chicken!

I think the Knorr kind doesn't have chicken broth, but I will double-check.

Mmmm, I heart their fake sausage.

Also, Trader Joe's has yummy meatless meatballs (for cheap!).

Don't you love how we've commandeered [livejournal.com profile] urbpan's recap of his bday?

He loves it. It makes him the center of attention with no effort whatsoever on his part! :)

I just thought of another place that has really good food -- Christopher's in Cambridge make buffalo tofu. The tofu is in little strips and its soaked in buffalo sauce and absolutely amazing. I'm addicted to buffalo sauce though, so who knows. I also just thought of this because I get to go shopping at Paper Source in Cambridge tonight for paper for various wedding projects, *and* Christopher's is right there...so maybe I'll be lucky and get to go!

Mmmmmmmm, I love buffalo sauce too - yum!!

There's a paper source in coolidge corner - did you know?

I'm such a moron when it comes to places/directions/locations, even though I've now lived here 4 yrs. I just had to ask my coworkers where Coolidge Corner is.

I know there's a Paper Source on Beacon St. in Brookline, one in Wellsley, and one in Cambridge. I've only ever been to the one in Cambridge...I don't know if the Beacon St. one would be closer.

The one on Beacon St. in Brookline is Coolidge Corner. I'd guess that'd be closer because you don't have to cross the river.

But then I can't get tasty buffalo tofu!!!

I just Mapquested both of them, and granted, Mapquest doesn't always give the best directions or even the roads I would take...but, the Beacon St. one is 5.43 miles away from my house while the Cambridge one is 5.39 miles away. Funny!

Ah, Boston is special that way. You can almost never get to a place the way the crow flies. Plus, driving across town is a traffic nightmare.
