A large proportion of the water in the Las Vegas wash system is street run off, but if we didn't have that, we'd have no water flowing in the washes at all. There are too many problems facing us for it even to be considered an issue, but what could be done to save the Muddy? Could catch basins be installed to collect the worst of the silt and trash? The problem with urban rivers is they're tended by plumbers, not naturalists.
Yeah, basically the storm drains need to be redesigned to keep the sand and trash out of the river. There's some talk about using street sweepers that actually pick up trash instead of just pushing it along to the next drain.
