August Ice

We took a boat ride up a fjord that ends in a glacier, to look at the icebergs there.

The less air in the iceberg, the bluer it is.

Freshly calved icebergs still have dirt from their life as part of a glacier.

This is as close as we could (safely?) get to the glacier.

But we could get very close to an iceberg if we wanted!
(This is our guide. Pictures of me standing on an iceberg will come once my dad deals with his millions of photos.)

They even fished a little iceberg out of the fjord and chopped it up to be put into drinks for us. The ancient air escapes the ice, making delicate tinkling sounds. When the engine was shut off, and we stopped talking we could hear the effervescence all around us in the water.

Dad likes his Greenland-shaped ice cube, but he'd prefer a hot chocolate!
