I'm back in Boston, where I'm relieved and a little surprised that it's still summer. The last couple days in Santiago made me remember how much better a city can look with leaves on the trees. Santiago was clement, but bleak, as this is winter for them.

I took 364 pictures on the trip, about 200 of which are worth sharing. Today I can get started on the task of resizing and fixing them--and organizing them (I'm a little worried about that part; I'm bad at organizing things, but I feel it's vital just the same, a recipe for hours spent fretting).

So here's a taste of posts to come, I hope you like it:

You can see three reconstructed Ahu sites, with Moai on them, a group of horses that got away from their caballero, and in the background, the village of Hanga Roa.

what an amazing trip that must have been. i'm jealous. i wonder if they limit the number of tourists they have each year? i'll go back and re-read your posts and see if you mention something about that. seems like people would be climbing over each other to visit such an interesting and beautiful place.

If you have web server space somewhere, I'd recommend a program called Gallery to help you get everything uploaded, organized, and captioned. It's what I use to post my digital pictures. ( http://gallery.sourceforge.net )

In any case, I look forward to all your pictures.

I don't believe there is a limit to visitation currently (the way there is a limit to visitation to the Galapagos and other ecologically sensitive places) but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a limit set in the future. Each year sees more tourists (the number doubled between the last figure I read and the figure quoted by my guide), and the archaeological community is scrambling to protect the sites.
