This craptastic selfie is my 3:00 snapshot, like it or not. Someone in the bar saw me doing it and came over to do it right.

I bought a second guitar controller the other day (from an lj person--go figure!) so last night we had family game time. Alexis played bass, the kid was on guitar, and I rocked the house on drums, naturally. Good times.

Also another lj friend (who is also a real life friend, but I communicate with her 100x more on lj than I ever did in rl) is having her honeymoon on Easter Island! I'm happy to pass on my indispensable guidebook and have it do some real good.

Iorana!

Apropos of not much, I stumbled upon this picture my dad took of me 3 years ago. I don't think I ever posted it, but even if I did, it's worth another look. Life is interesting and this is an interesting planet we live on.

why not, more of my dad's pictures )

Here I am on a palm tree.

Here I am in front of a monument.

Next we visited Puna Pau, a one hundred foot hill of red volcanic rock, that was used as a quarry for the giant topknots or hats, called pukao, that many of the moai wore.

When I go anywhere--South Boston, San Francisco, Easter Island, wherever--I tend to notice certain things, that other tourists don't necessarily pay attention to. These are the pictures I took that day after looking at some of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world.

We leave Tonga Riki and go to a couple other sites.

We saw Tongariki earlier in the day, as we approached Rano Raraku. It is so amazing, even from a distance , that we were eager to return.

Most of the famous stone statues are made from stone from the volcanic cone of Rano Raraku. One of the most striking things about the site is that it seems to have been abandoned, with moai in all stages of construction and relocation, all around the mountain. Though it is thought that it took many years for the change from the moai culture to the later culture to take hold, the impression one gets at Rano Raraku, is that work simply stopped one day--the quarry workers, stonemasons, carvers and transporters all seem to have just cast their tools down and quit. Again, this most likely took place over a period of many years, but the moai are still where they were left, some 500 to 600 years ago.

Approaching the mountain, one can see the moai, still standing, in the distance.

Legend tells that the first people to arrive at Easter Island were the king Hotu Matu'a and his entourage. Also according to legend, the tomb of Hotu Matu'a is located at the site of Ahu Akahanga. Archaeology has not spoken definitively on the legends yet.

This picture of Dale in the cave, telling us about the history of the place is one of the nicer ones I got. )

A teaser

I'm back in Boston, where I'm relieved and a little surprised that it's still summer. The last couple days in Santiago made me remember how much better a city can look with leaves on the trees. Santiago was clement, but bleak, as this is winter for them.

I took 364 pictures on the trip, about 200 of which are worth sharing. Today I can get started on the task of resizing and fixing them--and organizing them (I'm a little worried about that part; I'm bad at organizing things, but I feel it's vital just the same, a recipe for hours spent fretting).

So here's a taste of posts to come, I hope you like it:

Cut for largish picture, the other picture posts will have smaller ones. )
