The weary travelers arrive

We are greeted at the airport by our guide, Dale, who turns out to be an impressive young archaeologist with boundless enthusiasm for the culture and history of Rapa Nui and the Rapanui people. He tells us we have tomorrow morning free, but that he'll take us on a half day tour in the afternoon. We stagger off with necklaces made of plant material on our aching stinking bodies.





Despite Dale's encouragement that we should go to the hotel bar, we just crash in our little beds, hearing the whoosh of...wind? cars? typhoon?



No, the ocean, you dope. Dawn reveals our rooms back window faces the west coast of Rapa Nui, and that sound is the Pacific Ocean, which we are surrounded by--over 2000 miles of it until the next inhabited places.

This is our view at breakfast.



We walk out the front way, which last night was fully obscured by darkness and fatigue.



Perhaps a stroll down the road.



Everything's new! Everything's something on Easter Island! Let's take pictures. If I'm not mistaken, the bean-laden tree in the foreground is mesquite.
