I spent a long time when I was a kid thinking about this whole ruining-what-you-love-by-living-there thing, and finally decided that what I needed to do was make millions of dollars, buy a crapton of land, and live on a tiny corner of it while preserving the rest from development/letting it return to nature. Problem solved by throwing money at it! Now if only everyone could do the same. (Still working on the millions of dollars part.)
