3:00 snapshot #438

While doing some wandering in the course of some pest control work, I found this little shack with a fire extinguisher in the window and a big hole in the roof.

Coyote tracks. Yes they are virtually identical to dog tracks (of an equal size domestic dog) but other tracking cues (scat, kill remains, coyote sightings) suggest strongly they are coyote tracks.

Wheeee!!!

For the past few days, I've been reading blog posts about the coyote in Central Park. I SAW one in the trees that border my backyard on Saturday. Sometimes we can hear them yapping across the river. My schnauzer insists that they're inviting him for dinner. We haven't delved into the implications of this with him.

I always was told the best way to differentiate between dog and coyote tracks is that dogs have the luxury of wandering around all over the place sniffing aimless things, whereas coyotes' tracks tend to be more as-the-crow-flies. I dunno if that's true, though.

It is true. I found too few of these tracks for that to be a diagnosing factor in this case, however.
