3:00 snapshot #1413

It's that time of year, where even my denial of the fact of autumn must fall away like so many beautiful sugar maple leaves.

One of the supposed advantages of using honey locust for street trees is their tiny leaflets easily blow away, not accumulating on the sidewalk. Um. Sure is pretty though.

Another day, another group of wine caps. The "rough ring" that they are named for (rugosoannulata) has fallen off each of these mushrooms. Never rely on only one field marking for identification, they say.
Quick stop off at Turtle Pond
Oct. 2nd, 2013 06:31 pm
On our way to the Urban Nature Walk at Malibu Beach I saw Turtle Pond and made a snap decision to pull over. The red maples are changing color and it's starting to look pretty amazing.

Along one edge you can see the smaller understory trees yellowing up too.

But for beautiful fall color I only had to look at the top of a wooden post, where British soldier lichens matched the nearby shrubs red for red.

Maggie and Jim had school last Sunday in the Forest Hills Cemetery, and Charlie and I came along too, since it was such a nice day and it had been a while since I'd been there. This fall is turning out to be one of the best in recent memory. Amazing foliage, some but not too much rain, and no freezing cold temperatures yet.

Fall colors?

As much as Alexis and I try to deny it and put it off, we have to accept that it really is fall. Technically it has been for over a week (not a full month, as those who have school-age children may think) so we will do our best to see the beauty as it unfolds. We went to the Stonybrook reservation to see some.
(I'm beginning to think I have Seasonal Affected Bipolar Disorder--I am so deliriously positive in the summer, then like somewhat pulled a switch I turn surly and struggle with depression and rage. Either I need a vitamin D IV drip or a move to the equator.)
Anyway, these colorful creations are the fruiting bodies of Laetiporus species fungi, better known as the Chicken Mushroom.

On Sunday we went to the Lost Pond Reservation. I was surprised at how many mushrooms I found, despite how late in the fall it is.

Charlie's first canoe ride: Ipswich River
Oct. 24th, 2010 07:21 pm
A bunch of my coworkers got together to form a paddling group. Neither me nor Dr. Susie own a boat, so we rented one. Charlie rode with us. Our first paddle together was probably also the last of the season. It was just above 40 degrees F when we got to the canoe rental place; the guy there said "Here are some brave souls!" Brave we were. Charlie had never been in a boat before, but he loves swimming more than anything else in the world; there was a real risk he would jump out of the canoe and flip it over. It was a little bit of a struggle to get him to get in the boat, and once he was in he was restless--cold aluminum on his tootsies! It was very cold when we headed upstream, but it got warmer and the scenery was gorgeous.

Nice day for a ride
Nov. 1st, 2009 08:01 amYesterday was the most pleasant October 31st in my memory--sunny, 70 degrees, breezy. And, since it was a Saturday, most everyone could get out and enjoy it. We took the opportunity to walk in our nearby park (instead of our usual weekend drive to some place a few miles away). It was so beautiful out there that I filled up my sd card, a first for this new camera. (I'll be buying a bigger card before I go anywhere special.) When I got home I found a theme emerged, which will help me spread the massive amount of images onto a couple posts. Without further ado: pairs of people on bikes in Olmsted Park.

Muddy River 10/22/09, 5:00 p.m.

No sense in denying it: fall has come to the Muddy River. Honestly, it was kind of hard not to make beautiful pictures this afternoon. (Forgetting to focus was one successful method.)

We've been to this place twice, both times in weather in which most people wouldn't walk around the block. Yesterday: about 40 degrees, cold drizzle.
