Urban species #010: London planetree
Platanus x
acerifolia"The world's most reliable city tree," according to
The Urban Tree Book is this hybrid of American and oriental sycamores. It is the most common tree in both London and Brooklyn, It's exceptionally hardy and pollution resistant, and often
planted along streets. It's easily identified as a sycamore by its flaky, mottled bark, and huge maple-like leaves. It can be distinguished from other sycamores by the arrangement of its fruit: American sycamores bear their buttonballs singly, oriental sycamore buttonballs come in groups of three or more, and London planetree fruits are paired.
