Urban Nature Pictures 4/10

Moss.

Alternate title: Unidentified structures on some moss growing on a puddingstone outcropping on Schoolmaster hill in Franklin Park. This was one of two pictures I took during yesterday's Urban Nature Walk. Here's the other:

I'm looking forward to Alexis' pictures from the walk.

Mmmm I love some good moss pictures. I'm doing a moss terrarium asap. The nature walk was great success, I gather?

Pretty moss!

Unidentified structures- protonoma/gametophore?!

Thanks, Gav.
After googling those two words, it looks to me like the structures are the sterile bases that the sporangia grow from. The sporangia have broken off and blown away.

Moss is neat- loved the TRIALS OF LIFE episode where Sir David showed a patch of moss to be a mini-jungle of springtails and predatory mites...

I guess once you've already decided to wear an eyepatch, a yellow Charlie Brown slicker seems downright normal by comparison.

We enjoyed the walk a lot. The wind made it cold initially but then later 'brisk' and October-like. We never knew the place had such a long history.
