Last winter, I somehow got the odor of giraffe urine into my snowboots. Yesterday they were soaking wet after lots of walking in deep snow, so I put them on the radiator to dry. I just picked them up and was greeted with fresh-baked funk.

(Giraffe urine is curiously close to cat spray in odor tone. A little earthier, less acrid, but still powerfully musky and persistent.)

I think I'd rather my boots smell of giraffe than of vinegar. Hard to know which is worse.

Are your giraffes housed on concrete in their night quarters? The giraffes at Perth Zoo get concrete inside with plenty of straw and dirt outside. The male giraffe would pee huge puddles on the concrete, and then he'd shit everywhere and tread on it and grind it into the concrete. Bitch to clean up after.

Yes, all that plus our floors are heated, so the trod-on pee-poop slurry bakes overnight.

ahhh the smell of stale cat pee...we had it in our Medford house when we first moved in (previous owners)...somehow I sprayed or cleaned the corner with everything I had and eventually the stank went away. We have some variety of low bushes out here that reminds me of that same funky smell..are cats, shrubs and giraffes all related somehow?????

The common denominator is likely some sulphur compound.

Urg, the smell of cat pee makes me violent! And I'm not even usually squeamish about smells.

I am actually quite pleased that I have a friend who recognizes the smell of giraffe urine. It's sort of cutting edge, don't you think?

I've heard that giraffe's have really high blood pressure....I'm wondering if it's chemically related to the cats' need to retain as much salt and water as possible, due to their desert environments. Deep-water squid also have that funky ammonia smell...

I don't know but I would say you could complain about that...

The vinegar thing, it works on cat pee and the smell disappates after a bit... heck I use apple cider vinegar to wash my hair and the smell rinses out.

But dried urine is forever if it is not washed out.

You know, I don't think I've ever encountered that particular problem...
