In Ponce, my dad stands near one of many big and weird fig trees we found.

Our hotel was convenient to the Fire Pump Museum.

We wandered around the streets and found an exhibit of photos outside. I was drawn to this one, of course, as I've been a bit starved of mushrooms.

In one cafe we were stared at by numerous colorful horned and snarling masks. The man in the cafe explained that they were Ponce Carnivale Masks, worn by a character called Vejigante who scares away the evil spirits and whatnot. Apparently in other parts of Puerto Rico the Vejigante is more clown-like, with no teeth and fewer horns. The Ponce Vejigante is pretty bad-ass, and I kind of wish I bought one of the masks from the cafe (made by a friend of the guy working there).

We went to a pedestrian shopping street to find a menswear shop to buy my dad some clothes. His are all smoke-damaged from the fire, as you may remember.

Night fell and the city square lit up.

There is no proof that I sang "La Bamba" during karaoke at this bar, but you could ask my dad about it.
